Automation
Compounding
Contamination Control
Pharmacy automation enhances efficiency, accuracy, and
safety in medication management through technologies,
including automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), material
transport delivery, pneumatic tubes, med carts, pharmacy
fulfillment robots, smart pumps, infusion pumps, tablet
and capsule counters. These solutions handle tasks
such as sorting, labeling, dispensing, inventory tracking,
and medication delivery, reducing errors and optimizing
workflows to improve patient care.
Pharmacy compounding involves preparing customized
medications to meet individual patient needs, governed
by strict regulatory standards such as USP <795>, <797>,
and <800>. Non-sterile compounding creates formulations
like creams or capsules in clean environments, while
sterile compounding, essential for injectable and high-
risk medications, requires aseptic conditions to prevent
contamination.
Pharmacy contamination control ensures a safe and
sterile environment for medication preparation and storage
through regulated practices in cleanrooms, gloveboxes,
hoods, and isolators, adhering to USP <797> and <800>
standards. Controlled environments maintain air quality,
temperature, and humidity while preventing microbial
contamination through HEPA filtration, environmental
monitoring,
and
strict
cleaning
protocols.
Sterile
equipment and protective gear enforce product integrity
and regulatory compliance, safeguarding patient safety
and ensuring the quality of pharmaceutical products.

Delivery & Shipping
Distribution
Facilities
Pharmaceutical delivery and shipping rely on strict
systems to ensure medications are transported safely
and effectively. Cold chain management maintains
temperature-sensitive
medications
at
controlled
temperatures throughout the supply chain to preserve
potency, from the manufacturing facility all the way to the
patient. Retail, specialty, and long-term care pharmacies
utilize courier and last-mile delivery services to ensure
timely and secure transport of medications, including
those requiring special handling or conditions, directly to
patients or care facilities.
Pharmacy distribution channels facilitate the secure and
efficient delivery of medications from manufacturers to
patients through wholesalers, who handle procurement,
storage, and distribution while ensuring regulatory
compliance and inventory management. In addition,
GPOs, COOPs, and programs like 340B, drug security
under DSCSA, as well as reverse distribution, all aid in the
process of the reliable and safe transfer of medications
from manufacturers to patients.
Pharmacy facilities are designed to enhance workflow,
compliance, and patient care with efficient layouts,
specialized
fixtures,
and
advanced
systems.
Key
components include design, fixtures, and engineering,
pharmacy refrigeration and cold storage, pharmacy
security, medication storage, and carousels, as well
as temperature monitoring (wireless). Effective waste
management ensures safe disposal while protecting public
health and the environment. By integrating technology and
sustainable practices, pharmacies optimize efficiency,
safety, and care quality.

Finance
Manufacturing
Patient Care
Pharmacy finance encompasses a range of specialized
services and processes tailored to support the financial
stability and growth of pharmacy businesses. These
facets include banking solutions like loans and business,
liability and malpractice insurance, worker’s comp,
claims, PA management, and adjudication.Pharmacy
Services Administrative Organizations (PSAOs) streamline
relationships with Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs),
manage claims, and ensure regulatory compliance.
In addition to buying and selling pharmacies, mergers
and acquisitions (M&A) involve the complex transfer of
pharmacy ownership, requiring due diligence, valuation, and
regulatory compliance. Together, these financial tools and
practices ensure operational efficiency, legal compliance,
and long-term profitability in the pharmacy sector.
Pharmacy manufacturing encompasses the production
of brand-name, generic, injectable and compounded
medications to ensure the availability of safe and effective
treatments. 503B outsourcing facilities produce bulk
compounded medications for healthcare providers under
FDA oversight. Pharmacy manufacturing increasingly
relies on contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs)
and drug shortage mitigation strategies to ensure a steady
supply of medications.
Pharmacy
patient
care
emphasizes
adherence,
compliance, and personalized wellness through programs
like medication synchronization (Med Sync), Medication
Therapy Management (MTM), and remote monitoring.
Assistance programs, loyalty resources, and discount
cards improve access and affordability, while point-of-
care services and personalized wellness plans promote
preventive care and holistic health. Patient communication,
outreach, and engagement initiatives ensure medication
compliance, address barriers, and enhance the overall
patient experience, positioning pharmacies as trusted
healthcare partners.

About the Pharmacy500 Stock ETF
What is RXinsider’s Pharmacy500 Stock ETF?
RXinsider’s Pharmacy500 Stock ETF is a stock portfolio
comprised of the largest publicly traded companies in the
Pharmacy500. This ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is for
educational and entertainment purposes only and is not
officially registered with the SEC.
What is the history and purpose of the ETF?
On 11/1/2024, RXinsider invested $10,000 in the stock of 11
of the largest companies with a U.S. market presence on the
Pharmacy500 list with the goal of tracking their collective
performance over time and sharing the results with the
pharmacy market.
We also wanted to have a little fun and compare the quarterly
and annual results to other investing benchmarks such as the
S&P500, NASDAQ, and DOW. We felt pharmacy professionals,
pharmacists, and pharmacy students would find this
information both interesting and educational.
What is the methodology for selecting the ETF companies?
More than 40 companies in the Pharmacy500 are publicly
traded companies (the public can purchase company stock).
RXinsider selected the Pharmacy500 companies with the
greatest market cap combined with a significant proportion
of their business focused on pharmacy.
Please note that stock holdings in the ETF are proportional
to the company’s market cap (its overall value). For example,
a greater percentage of the ETF is invested in McKesson vs.
Premier due to McKesson’s larger market cap. Companies
such as CVS Health are not included because they are not a
Pharmacy500 company.
