DOSIS Blister-Card Automation
Boost pharmacy production and ofer caregivers more
convenience through hands-free robotic blister packaging.
PRIMARY INTENDED OUTCOME
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were nine million
Americans receiving services in or through long-term care (LTC) facilities as of the
year 2014. Research indicates that the average LTC medication pass involves 73
diferent pharmaceuticals and can take a nurse nearly two hours to complete.
Blister packaging makes medication administration easier for nursing staf by
eliminating the need to open multiple prescription bottles for each dose. It also
prevents dispensing errors: Packaging labels can clearly indicate days and times that
medications should be administered, and staf can confrm at a glance whether or not
a dose was given.
Despite the benefts of blister packaging, manually loading and labeling is extremely
time-consuming and inefcient. Manchac Technologies' DOSIS robots ofer a fully
automated, cost-efective solution that brings reliable, hands-free blister packaging
right into your pharmacy.
THE CHALLENGE
Tarrytown Expocare is an LTC pharmacy specializing in intellectual and developmental
disability communities nationwide. Their goal is to create efcient processes and
provide superior service to home- and community-based providers, intermediate
care facilities, and individuals living at home. Founded in 2007, Tarrytown is currently
licensed in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.
Between 2012 and 2015, the pharmacy experienced signifcant growth, and their
volume more than tripled from 300 to approximately 1,000 patients. Stafng had
also grown, but “we were running out of space in the pharmacy,” said Zach Corbell,
Pharmacist-in-Charge at Tarrytown. “We were looking for opportunities to increase our
production hours without bringing in additional staf.”

PRIMARY INTENDED OUTCOME
Despite an overall trend showing an increase in the number of independent
pharmacies that close their doors every year, new standalone stores continue to appear
in communities across the U.S. The challenges these independent shops face include
the efect of reimbursements on revenue, the cost of managing inventory, as well as
difculty parsing and acting on crucial proft and loss metrics.
Owners looking to expand their footprint have several options with Medicine Shoppe
International (MSI), whether they choose to convert an existing pharmacy, acquire a
pharmacy, or open a new store or tele-pharmacy, they can utilize a proven franchise
model with a full brand or co-branding plan that works for them. MSI Franchisees
beneft from a variety of business solutions that maximize marketing, tap into
advantages of scale, and ultimately improve patient engagement and care.
THE CHALLENGE
There was a time when independent pharmacy owners found it fairly easy to be
successful. Today, the environment is much more challenging, according to Jerry
Barnette, managing partner of the Med-Save family of pharmacies and independent
owner since 1994. “We’ve gone from competing against the chains to competing
against the insurance companies and PBMs. We have to watch everything carefully
to determine where we will be six months down the road regarding reimbursements
and retroactive adjustments.”
