SUMMER 2026 I HEALTH SYSTEM • INFUSION

FROM OUR FOUNDER

Healthcare continues to evolve at a pace that challenges

even the most forward-thinking pharmacy leaders.

For hospital and health system pharmacy directors and

managers, the balancing act remains clear: improve

patient outcomes while maintaining strict control over

costs, compliance, and operational efficiency. This issue

of 20Ways was developed with that reality in mind.

At its core, 20Ways is about connection, linking pharmacy

decision-makers with solutions across the pharmacy

supply chain. In this Summer issue, we are proud to present

companies whose products and services are designed to

address real-world challenges in your pharmacy operations.

From drug procurement and sterile compounding to

technology platforms and workflow optimization tools,

each featured organization represents an opportunity to

strengthen both clinical and financial performance.

A key highlight of this issue is our focused exploration of

503B Outsourcing Facilities and Compounding Services.

As demand for sterile compounded medications continues

to rise and regulatory scrutiny increases, outsourcing has

become an essential strategy for many health systems.

This themed section provides insight into partners that can

help ensure supply reliability, maintain quality standards,

and reduce the operational burden on internal teams.

Complementing the solution-focused company profiles, this

issue also presents two perspectives on the forces reshaping

pharmacy practice. One examines the growing complexity of

the 340B program, particularly the shift toward rebate models

and the financial and operational considerations now facing

health systems. The other looks ahead to the future of infusion,

where changing sites of care, expanding specialty services,

and the rise of home-based treatment are redefining how

and where patients receive therapy — prompting pharmacy

leaders to rethink strategy, access, and care delivery.

Ultimately, this issue is designed to serve as both a resource

and a catalyst. The challenges facing pharmacy today are

significant — but so are the opportunities.

By leveraging innovative solutions and

staying informed on key industry trends,

pharmacy leaders can continue to

elevate patient care while navigating

financial and operational pressures.

THE CHALLENGE: NAVIGATING REGULATORY

AND OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES

IU Health’s pain clinic was tasked with delivering roughly 100

intrathecal pain pump refills per week. Between significant

compliance hurdles, and the escalating risk exposure

associated with in-house compounding, it became clear

that trying to do everything in-house was unsustainable.

Tate Trujillo, PharmD, BCPS, FCCM, FASHP, CPEL, Executive

Director of Pharmacy, Clinical Nutrition & Indiana Poison

Center at IU Health, explained, “We were trying to manage

this out of our satellite pharmacy and were not meeting

the need, particularly as the clinic was adding more and

more providers.” This led the pharmacy leadership team

to explore outsourcing solutions that could provide both

regulatory, compliance, and workflow improvements.

THE SOLUTION: AIS HEALTHCARE—THE RIGHT

COMPOUNDING PHARMACY PARTNER

IU Health needed to identify a pharmacy specializing

in Category 3 medications that could meet USP <797>

standards. Ideally, this pharmacy could integrate with IU

Health’s existing workflows and streamline administrative

burdens. After a thorough evaluation, IU Health chose

AIS Healthcare, an outsourcing partner with advanced

infrastructure, providing the highest standards in sterile

compounding.

AIS immediately began providing:

Quality control measures, from the industry-leading

cleaning, disinfection, and sanitization of its facilities

to the latest testing equipment

Terminal sterilization for enhanced safety and

compliance

Case Study: Challenges

and Solutions to Category 3

Compounded Medications

With its multiple, large-scale health facilities, Indiana

University Health (IU Health) needed assistance in

2019 managing their demand for intrathecal pain

pump–compounded medications. Increasing demand

for pain-pump refills, and the accompanying federal

compliance regulations posed significant operational

challenges. So they sought a trusted outsourcing

partner that could reduce overhead, streamline access,

and maintain the highest possible standards.

Financial support services, including multiple billing

options and the AIS patient assistance program

Requisite regulatory documentation, with detailed

quality reports outlining:

o Sterility testing

o Staff competency training

o Stock solution validation

o Environmental assessments

o Ongoing compliance measures

Accurate billing was another hurdle. “Trying to actually bill

effectively and get reimbursed appropriately is a challenge,

and since AIS does a direct bill for us, those solutions have

been solved,” said Tate Trujillo.

A SMOOTH TRANSITION TO OUTSOURCED

COMPOUNDING

The transition, which took place around 2019, was

designed for minimal disruption. AIS facilitated staff

training and pharmacy onboarding. They also implemented

a streamlined ordering process. This groundwork has

allowed IU Health to integrate outsourced compounding

services with remarkable efficiency to this day.

THE FUTURE: DRIVING BETTER OUTCOMES

FOR PATIENTS AND PROVIDERS

“Our top priority is ensuring patient safety while maintaining

compliance with evolving regulations,” said Tate Trujillo.

“AIS Healthcare’s robust processes, including double-

gloving, redundant checks, and terminal sterilization,

gave us confidence that they could deliver the quality and

compliance we require.” Josie Klink, PharmD, Pharmacy

Manager of Business Operations & Procurement, reaffirms

that, “AIS has been an outstanding partner for us regarding

the intrathecal pain pumps and this critical patient

population.”

IU Health’s experience with AIS serves as a model for other

health systems facing similar challenges. By prioritizing

compliance, patient safety, and financial sustainability,

IU Health has successfully navigated the complexities of

Category 3 compounding and created a framework for

continued excellence in patient care.

Company Background

Located in Columbus, Ohio, American Health Packaging (AHP)

is a trusted manufacturer of serialized, barcoded unit dose

medications serving the healthcare marketplace. For more than 30

years, AHP has supported hospital, acute care, long term care, and

clinic pharmacies nationwide with commercially available unit

dose products sourced through partner GPOs and wholesalers.

AHP operates an FDA registered facility that adheres to current

Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) guidelines and is licensed

by the DEA to package Schedule II–V controlled substances.

Built on a foundation of quality, regulatory compliance, and

manufacturing expertise, AHP established its reputation through

leadership in oral solid unit dose manufacturing and continues to

evolve alongside the needs of pharmacy customers.

Today, AHP’s expanding portfolio includes oral solids, liquid unit

dose cups, oral syringes, inhalants, and powder or granule oral

suspensions. In addition to its unit dose portfolio, AHP has relaunched

its contract packaging services, extending its manufacturing and

packaging capabilities to support pharmaceutical partners with

quality driven, compliant solutions. AHP remains focused on

delivering reliable access to products and services that support safe

medication administration and operational efficiency.

Product Overview

AHP is committed to helping pharmacies operate more efficiently

by offering an extensive portfolio of unit dose medications.

With over 600 unit dose SKUs available, AHP products are

manufactured using quality components and feature legible,

accurate barcodes that support bedside barcode medication

administration (BCMA) processes.

American Health Packaging delivers serialized, barcoded unit dose medications that

help pharmacies support accurate bedside administration, strong BCMA performance,

and consistent access to ready-to-dispense products across care settings.

American Health Packaging —

Serialized, Barcoded Unit Dose

Solutions for Pharmacy

AHP’s diverse unit dose portfolio helps close the gap between

medications pharmacies are repackaging internally and those that

are commercially available, enabling health systems to streamline

workflows and reduce operational burden. Unit dose oral liquid

products are designed to deliver similar safety, efficiency, and cost

saving benefits, with right sized packaging, differentiated labeling,

and accurate barcoding.

In addition to its unit dose offerings, AHP provides contract

packaging services that extend its manufacturing and packaging

expertise. AHP’s capabilities continue to evolve to meet changing

clinical, operational, and supply needs.

Supporting Safety, Compliance, and Efficiency

Effective bedside workflows depend on medications that scan accurately

and perform reliably within Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA)

systems. AHP’s growing unit dose portfolio is designed to support

consistent scanning performance, helping pharmacies advance patient

safety initiatives while improving operational efficiency.

By offering commercially available unit dose medications, AHP helps

reduce the need for internal repackaging, freeing up pharmacy resources

and supporting more streamlined dispensing processes.

AHP also supports pharmacies as they work toward compliance with

USP <800> guidelines. AHP helps to align with safe handling practices

while protecting both patients and caregivers.

Driving Clinical Excellence Across

Hospitals & Health Systems

What role does infusion pharmacy play in the

modern hospital or health system?

Infusion pharmacy is the backbone of patient care in hospitals

and health systems. Every sterile preparation, compounded

medication, and infusion delivered to the bedside represents

the expertise and precision of the pharmacy team. Infusion

pharmacists ensure that therapies are accurate, safe, and aligned

with evidence-based practice.1

In recent years, the role of infusion pharmacy has expanded

significantly. Beyond preparing sterile products, pharmacists

now drive initiatives in medication safety, clinical optimization,

and interdisciplinary collaboration. The infusion service line

has evolved from a production-focused operation to a strategic

clinical service that directly impacts patient outcomes, regulatory

compliance, and institutional efficiency.

How is technology transforming infusion

pharmacy practice?

Technology is reshaping infusion operations across every phase of

the medication-use process. Automated IV compounding systems,

barcode verification, gravimetric technologies, and workflow

management software have become essential tools for ensuring

accuracy and compliance.2

Integration with the electronic health record (EHR) allows real-

time verification and documentation, reducing transcription

errors and improving traceability. Artificial intelligence (AI) and

predictive analytics are also emerging in pharmacy operations.

Hospitals are beginning to use AI-driven dashboards to forecast

shortages, monitor workflow performance, and detect potential

compounding deviations before they occur.3

These innovations enhance safety and optimize resources. Directors

of pharmacy who invest in digital compounding workflows and

data-driven process monitoring are better positioned to improve

both quality metrics and financial outcomes.3

What are the primary compliance and regulatory

concerns facing infusion pharmacies today?

Compliance with USP <797> Pharmaceutical Compounding

— Sterile Preparations and USP <800> Hazardous Drugs —

Handling in Healthcare Settings remains foundational to infusion

pharmacy operations.4 Inspections are increasingly focused on

process validation, staff competency, and continuous environmental

monitoring.

Hazardous drug handling requires not only physical containment

and ventilation but also documented training, certification,

and regular re-evaluation of staff competency.4 Continuous

quality assurance and documentation are critical to maintaining

compliance under evolving medication management standards.5

Many health systems are also aligning compliance with

sustainability objectives. Energy-efficient cleanroom operations,

waste reduction programs, and greener supply chains are now

part of broader ESG initiatives in hospital pharmacy leadership.

What are the biggest challenges currently facing

infusion pharmacies in hospitals?

Staffing shortages and burnout remain pressing concerns. Sterile

compounding and infusion services demand technical precision

and vigilance, yet many hospitals face workforce constraints. Recent

data highlights increased vacancy rates for sterile compounding

technicians, underscoring the need for ongoing recruitment,

training, and retention strategies.6

Medication shortages also continue to disrupt operations.

Shortages of injectables, electrolytes, and parenteral nutrition

components often place infusion pharmacists in crisis-management

roles. Directors of pharmacy are turning to advanced inventory

management systems and predictive analytics to improve visibility

and mitigate risk.3

Finally, interoperability remains a technical challenge. Many

hospitals still struggle to fully integrate compounding workflow

platforms with EHR systems. Gaps in system interoperability can

contribute to medication delays and safety risks if not addressed

through coordinated digital infrastructure planning.7

What strategies are leading hospitals using to

strengthen infusion pharmacy services?

Progressive health systems are adopting a systems-based approach

to infusion pharmacy improvement. Some are applying Lean or

Six Sigma methodologies to streamline workflow, reduce waste, and

optimize technician utilization.8 Centralized compounding service

models are becoming more common, allowing multi-hospital

systems to consolidate resources while maintaining compliance

with USP standards.4

Education and competency validation remain at the heart of every

strong program. Ongoing training in aseptic technique, hazardous

drug handling, and equipment use ensures consistency and

compliance.9 Some hospitals are incorporating simulation-based

learning, peer assessments, and real-time quality dashboards to

reinforce best practices.

Embedding pharmacists within clinical infusion service lines,

such as oncology, parenteral nutrition, and critical care, has also

proven to improve patient outcomes. Health systems that integrate

pharmacists into multidisciplinary infusion teams report stronger

clinical oversight, reduced variability, and enhanced safety metrics

across departments.8,9

How can infusion pharmacies balance patient safety

with financial sustainability?

Effective pharmacy leaders approach cost management through

value optimization rather than cost reduction. By leveraging

data analytics to track overfill, expiration waste, and delayed

administrations, hospitals can recover significant operational

savings without compromising care quality.3

Standardization of drug concentrations, infusion protocols, and

dosage ranges has emerged as one of the most effective safety

and cost-control strategies.8 Standardization minimizes variability,

streamlines pump programming, and reduces the likelihood of error.

Partnerships with 503B outsourcing facilities can provide additional

flexibility, particularly when in-house capacity is constrained.

However, oversight remains essential. Hospitals must evaluate

vendor quality systems and maintain rigorous documentation to

ensure patient safety and compliance with USP requirements.1,2,4

What does the future of infusion pharmacy look like

in hospitals and health systems?

Infusion pharmacy is moving toward a highly data-driven and

clinically integrated future. Robotics and automation will continue

to refine sterile compounding precision, while advanced analytics

will enable proactive quality assurance and predictive workload

planning.7,3

Personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics will also reshape

infusion therapy. Pharmacists will increasingly tailor therapy

selection and dosing based on genetic profiles and real-time

biomarker data.10

As more care shifts to ambulatory and home-based environments,

infusion pharmacists will play a crucial role in ensuring safe

transitions of care, continuity of therapy, and adherence

monitoring. Integration across inpatient, outpatient, and home

infusion settings will become the defining marker of high-

performing health systems.3

The infusion pharmacy of the future will be intelligent, interoperable,

and indispensable. Directors of pharmacy and clinical infusion

pharmacists who embrace innovation, automation, and analytics

will set the standard for excellence in patient-centered care.
